That reservoir project was designed to supplement the storage capacity along the aqueduct, but the dam failed catastrophically in 1928, just 2 years after it was completed, killing more than 400 people and destroying several parts of the aqueduct as well. The tragedy was one of the worst engineering disasters in American history. It put another stain on the aqueduct project, and it effectively ruined the reputation of William Mulholland, who was largely considered a hero in LA for all his work on the aqueduct and the city’s water system. The dam was never rebuilt, but workers restored the aqueduct to functioning service in only 12 days.
