In both instances, the difference in miles driven per crash is 250,000, giving the illusion that the difference in performance is similar. Contrary to this, the former comparison shows an ADS that reduces the number of crashes per mile by 25% (1 IPMM vs 1.33 IPMM), while the latter reduces the number of crashes per mile by 50% (2 IPMM vs 4 IPMM). Because the incidents per exposure units rates are linearly proportional to the number of events and the exposure unit per incident rates are not linearly related, it is not readily apparent that the relative rates are more difficult to compare.”
